As of April 2022, Riverbend Pork Group welcomed a new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Anthony Houghton.
Anthony has led Financial teams and departments across a range of organisations in New South Wales and Queensland and we are so pleased he has joined us and will bring his wealth of experience and knowledge to the Group.
We are thrilled to welcome Anthony to the team and took the opportunity recently to ask him a few questions about his impressive credentials, experience, and advice as a farming and finance professional.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do for fun?
I have a small family here in Toowoomba these days (mother, sister and nephew), but I grew up in North West NSW. I loved farming and got up to the usual antics on farms and then moved around Australia pursuing a career in accounting, taking up opportunities in various industries and locations.
I tend to work too much, but outside that my hobbies have been rugby, horses, DIY projects and leatherwork. I have a small farm on the side which keeps me busy on weekends and is a great spot to kick back on the verandah for a beer or rum. When possible I like to do some bait fishing and recently I got to get back up on a wakeboard!
What is your role at Riverbend?
I am the Chief Financial Officer, so my job is to lead the team on all things financial. From systems and reporting to analysis, compliance, insurance and all that “admin stuff” behind the scenes.
I am also a member of the Riverbend Leadership Team (RLT) along with the COO Guy Holcroft and General Manager People & Culture Tara Maguire.
What other industries have you worked in before moving to the pig industry?
Riverbend Pork group is my first role in the Pork industry, but I was first introduced to pigs at university when I was lucky enough to study in the United States and work in a research abattoir.
I have worked in a number of fields, from heavy industry and transport to agricultural enterprises such as vineyards, merchandise and feedlots.
What is your favourite thing about working at Riverbend?
It is early days, but the team are great!
I have found everyone extremely helpful and I believe everybody can see where we as a company want to get to with production, systems, etc. and with the team we have in place, we will definitely get there.
What do you think is crucial to the future of the pig industry?
I am still learning the pork industry, however as an intensive livestock industry, knowledge of livestock nutrition and health is key, both for the animal and the business.
I find most people in agriculture are quite passionate about the product they produce and really do aim to take care of their animals - and of course, always trying to get a better price!
Is there an industry resource that you would recommend to others?
Unfortunately, most of my resources are accounting focused so most people would find them pretty boring!
A lot of the pork industry publications I have read since starting at Riverbend have been very interesting reading though. Maybe, in time, there is an opportunity for the pork industry veterans of the business to do some workshops for the newbies and younger generation to learn from, I have done this in the past for graduate accountants and found it a great way to learn and build connections.
Is there any advice you would give a younger version of yourself when you were just starting out in the industry?
I was fortunate enough to do a degree in agriculture, but I always felt that whilst a degree gave you a great deal of technical understanding you could learn a lot from the old hands in the industry. This goes for accounting too.
I once read an article which detailed a young graduate's experience of watching two older farmers arguing with each other over a fence about what to do for the season. The young graduate, who was working with them, had said he felt he had learnt as much from listening to that argument as he had in his first year of university.
A lot to be said for the wisdom of experience, listening and learning from our environment and peers.
Thanks to Anthony for answering our questions!
